Presentation of the UMR 6153

In the Department of Neurovegetative Physiology, research is focused on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. ANS is an essential interface between nervous, endocrine and immune systems and is a key-element in homeostasis preservation.

Studies carried out in the laboratory have widely contributed to the evolution of concepts in this field, i.e. that ANS is more than a visceral "motor" system, using para- and sympathetic efferent pathways.
Indeed :

  • Visceral afferences are essential in the organization and regulation of ANS responses.
  • Motor or efferent responses are elaborated by central and peripheral neuronal networks, which have very high integrative abilities at all levels.
  • Functioning of the whole system depends on the networks hierarchic organization, and on a simultaneous and parallel treatment at the level of several networks.
