“The Role of Brain Inflammation in Alzheimer’s (...)

The main goal of my presentation is to demonstrate that chronic brain inflammation does not cause Alzheimer’s disease (AD), rather, it underlies the regional and neurotransmitter system vulnerability that characterizes this disease, as well as many others. I have used an animal that reproduces components of AD in order to investigate the mechanisms underlying neuronal degeneration and also to investigate potential pharmacotherapies. My research emphasizes the role of chronic brain inflammation and dysfunction of glutamate neurotransmission as the underlying mechanisms driving the neurodegeneration.
